It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season – shopping, planning, and parties. But amidst the excitement, don’t forget one of the most meaningful gifts you can give yourself: your own well-being.
The further we get into the holidays, the more people tend to exercise less, eat poorly, and experience more stress. This year, defy those trends with these wellness gifts to yourself:
- Silence, Stillness, and Stress Relief: Take a few minutes each day to unplug and recharge. You can use our pre-recorded guided meditations or join the CARS mid-week meditation. These quiet moments can help you reset and reduce stress. If stress is particularly high this holiday season, schedule a counseling session with CARS for support.
- Sunshine and Movement: Skip the mall and take a walk outside. Explore one of our Lobo Trails for a break from your workday.
- Preventive Care: Consider scheduling a medical checkup or dental visit. Plan your healthcare for 2026 and make the most of your health benefits and any remaining Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds.
- Seasonal Nutrition: Boost your nutrition by enjoying winter produce like squash, broccoli, apples, and pomegranates. For a healthy lunch, visit La Posada or the University Club.
- Endorphin Boost: Don’t wait for New Year’s resolutions – get moving now! Johnson Center is quieter in December, making it a great time to start a new routine. If you are on north campus with a hospital ID badge, you might prefer the Domenici Wellness Center which is open 24/7. If you have health and fitness tuition remission funds remaining, you might consider Continuing Education fitness classes, including the 24 or 48 week Sports & Wellness classes with gym membership.
- Laughter: Smile often and do something silly each day. Laughter is a powerful stress reliever and can boost your mood while defusing the stress of the season.
And remember – wellness is a gift best shared! Invite others to join you in these activities and help create a healthier, happier holiday season for all.
