The University of New Mexico offers eligible pre-65 retirees the
following benefits in addition to retirement benefits available under
the ERA Defined Benefit plan or the Alternative Retirement Plan. To
access these benefits, a potential retiree must meet the criteria of University
Administrative Policy 3600, Section 2.3
Retiree Pre-65 Open Enrollment for 2013-2014
Open Enrollment for the UNM Pre-65 retiree benefit plans for the 2013-2014 plan year will begin on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 and end on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. During this time, Pre-65 UNM retirees and/or their Pre-65 dependents are eligible to make changes to their UNM retiree Medical and Dental coverage.
If you do not want to make changes to your
current coverage, you do NOT have to submit any forms to Human Resources and your current Medical and Dental coverage will continue for the 2013-2014 plan year. If you need assistance making changes to your benefits, or have questions, please call 277-MyHR (6947) for more information or if you do not receive a packet.

All Open Enrollment forms and application materials need to be
submitted to the HR Service Center by May 7, 2013 at the address
below. In addition, the HR Service Center is open Monday through

Recent Policy Changes affecting Pre-65 Retiree Benefit eligibility
Enrollment deadline for UNM retirees

Effective July 1, 2011, employees who retire, and are eligible to
participate in UNM's retiree medical plan, must enroll within 60 days
from their retirement date and maintain continuous coverage thereafter.
Five consecutive year rule

Effective July 1, 2016, employees must be enrolled in UNM medical
insurance for five consecutive years, immediately preceding retirement,
to be eligible to participate in UNM's retiree medical plan. Other
policy provisions remain in effect.
Retiree Health Care Task Force Rate and eligibility
changes

On July 1, 2011, the Retiree Health Care Task Force recommendations
were implemented that affected pre-65 retiree benefit eligibility and
contributions to pre-65 retiree benefits. The updated rates are
indicated below.

In addition to the contribution changes, the Task Force changed the
eligibility requirements for future retirees by requiring that all
faculty/staff hired after that date must satisfy an age requirement of
60 and service requirement of 20 years, or an age requirement of 65 and
service requirement of seven years.

University of New Mexico before the age of 65. Pre-65 retirees have
access to the same medical coverage that they had as active employees,
but pay premiums based on the percentages outlined for pre-65 retirees
below.
Pre-65 Retiree Premium Contribution Rate Schedule
Effective July 1, 2011, the University contribution to pre-65 retirees
was reduced by 5%, and retiree contributions increased 5%. The retiree
contribution will increase 1% per year on the following schedule for
five years. The 1% per year contribution is not associated with any
potential increases attributable to rising premium costs.

Dental Insurance Carrier
Pre-65 Retirees have access to the same Dental coverage that they had
when they were active employees. UNM offers dental insurance coverage
from Delta Dental of New Mexico. UNM offers two dental plans:

Pre-65 Retiree Life Insurance Benefits
UNM Offers term life insurance through Standard Life Insurance. In order to retire with life insurance benefits from UNM, an employee must be enrolled in the benefit prior to retirement.
The amount of coverage is based on annual salary at retirement.
Basic Coverage Available to the Pre-65 Retiree
The basic life insurance benefit is 100% of pre-retirement salary, adjusted to the next higher multiple of $1,000, with a minimum of $25,000 and a maximum of $150,000.
Supplemental Coverage Available to the Pre-65 Retiree
Supplemental life insurance is additional coverage, or "tiers" of coverage beyond the basic coverage. Supplemental life insurance is 100% paid by the retiree. Each Tier is the equivalent of one year's salary, and, upon retirement, is based on your pre-retirement earnings. The maximum coverage under both Basic and Supplemental coverage is $1,850,000.
Spouse and Child Coverage
Spousal and child coverage purchased prior to retirement will terminate at the time of retirement. You may apply for a conversion of this coverage to an individual policy within 31 days of separation. For more information on this option, please contact Standard Life Insurance at 1(800)759-8702.
Cost of Pre-65 Retiree Life Insurance Benefits
The cost of Basic Life is $.063 per $1,000 of your pre-retirement salary multiplied by your contribution rate. The cost of supplemental coverage per $1,000 of coverage is as follows:
