ERA Process

For those employees preparing to retire through ERA, Retirement 101, a class offered by Learning Central, is the best place to begin.  This class is open to anyone who wants to learn more about the ERA retirement process at UNM, whether someone thinking about retirement or a newly hired employee.  The class will provide information about this valuable UNM benefit and is free to employees.

Retirement 101 is jointly taught by representatives from both ERA and the UNM Benefits office. The two-hour class will explain the ERA Retirement process, what to plan for prior to retirement, UNM benefits available to retirees, the Medicare process for 65+ retirees, and more.

ARP Process

  1. Notify your department in writing of your intentions to retire and your last scheduled day of employment with UNM.
  2. Contact your ARP provider and apply for your annuity distribution. TIAA-CREF can be reached at 800-842-2009 or on the Web at http://www.tiaa-cref.org/ .  VALIC can be reached at 800-448-2542 or on the Web at http://www.aigretirement.com.
  3. Contact Retirement Services at 277-6947 in writing to notify them of your application for you annuity distribution from your ARP provider.
  4. Submit a signed UNM Benefit Election form to the HR Service center if you are eligible to continue benefits into retirement.

Retirement Eligibility Requirements

In order to retire under the UNM Alternative Retirement Plan, you must be separated from employment with UNM.

Insurance Continuation for ARP Participants

To retain UNM retiree benefits, you must provide proof of your application to receive benefits from your ARP provider to the UNM Human Resources office and have met the following criteria:

  1. You must be 59 ½ years of age,
  2. You must have completed a minimum of 5 consecutive years of service with UNM immediately prior to retirement, AND

You must have been actively enrolled in health, dental, and life insurance benefits by a local group health insurance policy for at least 4 of those 5 years, and have been enrolled in one of the UNM health insurance plans during the last 12 consecutive months of employment at UNM.
