About Retirement

Retirement Services, a department of Human Resources, offers a number of administrative services to active UNM staff and faculty. All retirement applications and retiree benefits for UNM employees, including both the Education Retirement Act (ERA) defined-benefit plan and the Alternative Retirement Plan (ARP) defined-contribution plan, are processed by this department. Retiree Services oversees Medicare enrollment for eligible UNM retirees and dependents, and processes enrollment for UNM-sponsored Medicare Advantage and Supplement plans. This department sponsors two Open Enrollment periods per year, one for under age 65 retirees and one for 65+ retirees. The Life Insurance process for all retirees and benefits for widows/widowers of UNM employees are also supported by Retirement Services.

UNM’s 403(b) and 457(b) supplemental retirement programs and the annual Retirement Vendor Fair in the fall are coordinated by Retirement Services. In partnership with Employee and Organizational Development, a number of classes on retirement topics are offered to educate employees on UNM retirement policies and benefits. Additionally, Retirement Services provides outreach and education to the community by offering onsite retirement classes, workshops, and individual group presentations for all divisions of UNM, including branch campuses.
