May is National Bike Month, and with longer days and warmer spring weather, it’s a great time to get out on your bike. Whether you ride for fitness, recreation, or transportation, cycling supports both physical and mental health. It’s also an environmentally friendly way to get around and helps reduce your carbon footprint.
We encourage you to take advantage of the many resources that support cycling on and around campus – whether you’re commuting by bike, joining a social ride, or exploring Albuquerque’s trails and paths.
Get your bike ready for the season at the Lobo Bike Shop in the Johnson Center. They service all bike models and provide expert support to help you ride safely and comfortably. If you are interested in hands‑on learning, the shop also offers bike tune‑up classes.
In addition, the UNM Bike Valet offers secure, monitored bike storage for staff, faculty, and students. Located on the east side of Popejoy Hall, it features quick check‑in and check‑out. One‑time registration with Parking and Transportation Services (PATS) using a Lobo ID card is required.
Bike lockers are another option, with locations throughout central and north campus available for annual rental. These spaces often fill quickly, so join the waitlist if you are interested.
For added security, the UNM Police Department strongly recommends bike registration. It’s free, easy, and can help with recovery if your bike is lost or stolen.
Celebrate Bike to UNM Day with the Office of Sustainability on Wednesday, May 6, from 8 to 10 a.m.
Stop by the North Campus Shade Structure or outside the Johnson Center for free SWAG, bike checks, and sustainability resources. Event registration is here
