Retirement Overview – Module 1
This overview of the retirement process with UNM will help employees to distinguish between the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (ERB) defined benefit pension, and the UNM Alternative Retirement Plan (ARP) defined contribution plan. Rules for becoming eligible to retire under these plans are presented, including options for disability retirement.
The retirement application process is provided, along with an introduction to UNM retiree benefits. Contacts and resources for retirement questions are included at the end of the course. More information about retiree benefits and how the retiree’s portion of benefit costs are calculated are covered in Retirement Overview – Modules 2 and 3.

Retirement Overview – Module 2
This module presents an overview of the benefits offered to employees who retire under the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board (NMERB) or the Alternative Retirement Plan (ARP). Policies and procedures for obtaining Post-Retirement benefits are provided, along with information about continuation and termination of benefits. Differences between retirement benefits for VEBA participants versus non-VEBA participants is explained, as are benefits for Pre-65 and 65+ retirees and their dependents.
More information about NMERB, ARP, retirement eligibility, and the retirement application process can be found in Module 1. How the retiree’s portion of benefit costs are calculated is covered in Retirement Overview – Module 3.

The third module in this three-part Retirement Overview explains how the UNM retiree’s costs for benefits are calculated, including the retiree’s portion of medical and dental benefits (if VEBA-eligible). Examples of VEBA-eligible retiree’s cost calculations are provided. Retirement benefits available for Non-VEBA vs. VEBA-eligible retirees are reviewed.

ERB Retirement 101 - Your Educational Retirement Benefits
This course, taught by a representative from the Education Retirement Board, will provide an overview of the ERA Defined Benefit Plan. This course will explain the retirement process, what benefit options are available under these programs, and how to make wise decisions considering those benefits.
I Want to Retire - NOW
Attend this session 4 - 6 months prior to your scheduled retirement date. This hands-on, working session is for current UNM staff and faculty who are ready to finalize their retirement from UNM. Please bring photocopies of all required documentation (birth certificates, passports) needed to retire from UNM. During this session, you will submit the required retirement forms and get answers to any last minute questions regarding your retirement.
Retirement Manager: How to get Started in UNM's Voluntary Retirement Savings Plans
Retirement Manager is a convenient, secure, Web-based access point from which you can manage your UNM 403(b) and 457(b) retirement plan accounts anytime and anywhere, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This workshop, taught by a representative from AIG Valic, offers a guided tour of this program, including planning tools, how to manage your payroll deductions, and how to customize your investments under these programs.
The UNM Retirement Process: An Overview
If you are less than one year away from retiring - Please sign up for the "I want to retire - Now" one hour working session.
The Overview class is targeted to UNM employees who are at least 1 - 2 years from retiring and want to learn more about the ERA retirement process at UNM and other valuable information regarding UNM retirement benefits. This class is taught by a representative from the UNM Benefits office. This class will explain the ERA Retirement process, what to plan for prior to retirement, UNM benefits available to retirees, the Medicare process for 65+ retirees, and more.
