As part of our commitment to aligning with the UNM 2040 strategic goals, the Division of Human Resources is embarking on efforts to streamline various processes related to staff recruitment, hiring, and transactions. One significant focus area involves the handling of education verification documents.
Effective July 1, 2024, for the majority of hiring actions, hiring departments will no longer be required to provide education verification documents for hiring actions. To verify the selected candidate’s credentials, HR will utilize National Student Clearinghouse to obtain the required education verification. We anticipate this change will reduce the administrative requirements placed on hiring departments and finalists and expedite the approval of hiring actions, thereby reducing the time to fill open positions.
It is important to note that there are circumstances in which departments will be required to provide education verification documents. For example, hiring departments must provide education verification documents in these instances:
1. Accounting series, where verification of required credit hours completion, finalists must provide official transcripts.
2. For degrees obtained outside foreign education, finalists must provide transcripts and determination of U.S. equivalency.
We recognize the significance of this change and the impact it may have on departments. HR is committed to providing further information and addressing any questions or concerns at the upcoming June HR Forum. In the meantime, HR will be working on updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and developing FAQs to address any anticipated questions in advance of the July 1 implementation.
