The 24-hour news cycle is alive and well these days. I don’t know about you, but I’m too connected at times trying to keep up with all the breaking news. I’ve started setting limitations on this for my own mental well-being, especially while I’m exercising. My workouts are a time for me to get present, move with intention, and release anxious thoughts.
Challenging workouts are great because they force you to stay in the present moment. If the workout is tough all you can do is focus on the task in front of you; you’re using movement to stay present.
However, not all workouts have to be challenging or intense to achieve this. You can also go on a simple walk and practice a movement meditation to take a break from information overload.
With all that said, if you’re someone who likes to watch the news while on the treadmill or you want to listen to a podcast during a run, see if you can start limiting the urge to be connected at all times during your workouts. And for my weightlifters, restrain yourself from checking your phones and social media between sets.
Find other times to take in information and keep your workouts as a special time when you get to disconnect and just focus on the task at hand. You’ll be surprised how much better you feel mentally and how much more efficient you are during your workouts.
