The Department of Education released changes to the Title IX regulations on April 19th. The changes go into effect on August 1st. The regulations expanded Title IX’s scope and included protections for sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as expanded protections for pregnant students. The regulations are facing numerous legal challenges, with 21 states halting the implementation of the new regulations on August 1. New Mexico is not one of the 21 states forbidding the regulations. Therefore, UNM will continue diligently to comply with the 2024 Title IX regulations by August 1. If changes to the regulations impact UNM, we will communicate those changes as we learn of them and explore ways to mitigate harm or loss of protection to our UNM community.
