Effective July 1, UNM will transition its Prescription Drug Plan from CVS Caremark to Express Scripts (ESI). This change is the result of a collaborative, competitive procurement process conducted jointly by UNM in partnership with Albuquerque Public Schools, the New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority, the Health Care Authority, and the Retiree Health Care Authority.
The transition supports UNM’s ongoing efforts to manage prescription drug costs while continuing to provide access to high‑quality medications and comprehensive pharmacy services.
Through Express Scripts, employees will continue to have access to a broad pharmacy network, home delivery options, and specialty pharmacy support. While cost‑sharing will generally remain consistent, some medications may be covered differently under the Express Scripts formulary, creating opportunities for lower‑cost alternatives where appropriate. Express Scripts will notify employees directly regarding any coverage differences for their medications.
If you are currently enrolled in a UNM Medical Plan, enrollment in our Prescription Drug Plan is automatic. New Express Scripts ID cards will be mailed out prior to July 1.
