Intervention and Referral

  1. If the employee appears impaired in the workplace follow the protocols set out in UBP 3270, Impairment in the Workplace http://policy.unm.edu/university-policies/3000/3270.html
  2. The employee must leave the work site after you run the checklist and document observable issues. The supervisor should request a taxi for the individual. The supervisor will be reimbursed by UNM. Do not let the employee drive him/herself home!
  3. If the employee is physically threatening, call University Police. If the employee appears to be severely impaired resulting in a concern regarding the individual's health, the supervisor may contact the ambulance.
  4. Advise the employee he/she may refute the findings by immediately obtaining a drug/alcohol test at the testing facility chosen by UNM (see Impairment Checklist for the testing facility). Remind the individual he/she may not drive and order a taxi for him/her (the supervisor will be reimbursed).
  5. Advise the employee he/she will need to provide EOHS with a completed Return to Work Clearance Form (Exhibit C of Policy) from a licensed medical and/or mental health provider certifying that he/she is able to return to work before he/she will be able to return to work.
  6. Provide the employee with the telephone number to CARS: 272-6868
