Setting Clear Expectations

Creating a development plan with your employee will aid in ensuring that performance goals are met.  It is important to communicate what a “Meets”, and “Exceeds Expectations” look like in your department.  There are general behaviors on the performance review form, but each department should have specific behaviors and task associated with performance goals.

When setting clear expectations it is important that you clearly indicate the behavior that is associated with each level of performance.  For example, let’s say you have an Administrative Assistant I in your department whose primary job is to provide frontline customer service to students.

Meets Expectations may look like:

Greeting customers in a pleasant manner, keeping their desk organized and neat, answering and managing phone calls correctly and complete some project work with direction as needed.

Exceeds Expectations may look like:

Creating a positive and cheerful environment with students, Let students know if there are any delays, keep the desk area clean and organized, come up with opportunities to improve on processes, be able to handle request with no assistance, efficiently be able to prioritize and complete projects independently, periodically ask for other projects or trains new staff on system, process, or procedures.

When determining behaviors associated with the University Values, use the Values template.
