Make Progress on Your Plan During Retirement Security Month!

It’s always important to consider your well-being from a holistic perspective, including your finances. National Retirement Security Month in October offers a chance to reflect on your retirement goals and see if you’re on track or need to make some progress.

A 2026 study from the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) reports that 61% of us believe we can live comfortably in retirement, but only 21% of us feel very confident. Two-thirds of us worry we won’t have enough money in retirement, and workers who have a retirement plan or plans at work have significantly more set aside.

Only about three in five of us have a good understanding of how our retirement plans work. Moreover, only 46% of us have calculated how much we and our spouses or significant others will likely need to cover health care expenses in retirement.

Six things you can do now to keep you moving in the right direction

  • Create or re-establish a budget and stick to it for managing your spending and saving.
  • Set up or rebuild your emergency fund.
  • Open an account and start saving, or save more as you get older, for retirement using your UNM-sponsored voluntary retirement plan.
  • Name a primary and a contingent beneficiary (or beneficiaries) for your accounts. This includes your NMERB pension or Alternative Retirement Plan, your voluntary UNM 403(b) and 457(b) retirement plan(s), and your life insurance, as well as other assets and valuable items such as your home. Ask your mortgage company to help set this up.
  • Get to know a financial professional who can provide you with a complimentary retirement plan projection as often as annually.
  • Create your will and let your loved ones know where it is located. Visit freewill.com to help create a will for free.

Want to help someone you care about enjoy a more comfortable retirement, too? Share these resources with your friends and family and keep the conversation going on this important issue!
