Are you hoping to get that perfect present this holiday - maybe a stylish new shirt or the latest phone? With the excitement of the season, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the idea of exchanging gifts. But don’t get so distracted that you forget about one of the most amazing gifts of all – your own health. Research tells us that the average person will gain weight, exercise less, and experience more stress during the holidays. Defy these statistics by giving yourself the following gifts to boost your wellness this holiday season:
- Silence: Take a break from all the shopping, planning, and parties. Give yourself 15 minutes of silence or meditation each day to regroup and recharge.
- Sunshine: Don’t get stuck inside the mall. Go outside and take a walk. Movement can combat weight gain - plus you’ll feel better, too.
- Medical Checkup: Have you had a physical lately? Need to go to the dentist? Get that appointment scheduled now. It’s also a great time to plan out your healthcare for the coming year to be sure you can effectively use your health benefits and any Flexible Spending Account (FSA) money you have saved.
- Healthy Food: Resist the temptation of the dessert plate with healthy fruits and vegetables currently in season. Now is the perfect time of year to enjoy winter squash, broccoli, beets, apples, and pomegranates. Too busy to cook? Stop by the University Club or La Posada for a healthy lunch.
- Endorphin High: You don’t have to wait until January to get back to the gym. Get a good workout whenever you can, and your body will thank you for it. Bonus Tip: Johnson Center tends to be less busy in December, meaning less waiting for that treadmill, swim lane, or squat rack.
- Laughter: Smile often and do at least one silly thing a day. It will boost your mood and defuse the stress of the season.
Taking these steps will help you be a happier, healthier person this holiday season. Better yet, wellness gifts work best when shared. Include family and friends and help make everyone’s season that much more festive and bright.
