Workers' Compensation

Through various programs, the University of New Mexico (UNM) strives to make the workplace a safe and healthy environment for all staff. The key to a safe work environment is the prevention of on-the-job incidents before anyone can suffer an injury. This responsibility is shared by all, and everyone is encouraged to bring work-related health and safety concerns to their supervisor's attention and/or UNM’s Risk Services department as soon as possible. UNM provides coverage to employees who incur an injury or illness arising out of and in the course of their employment, in accordance with the laws of the State of New Mexico, Chapter 52, Article 1, NMSA 1978.

Injured/ill employees must complete the Workers’ Compensation Claim packet by Risk Services.

Who to Contact

  1. First, seek medical attention to treat the injury if it is critical. Employees may contact the Center for Occupational Environmental Health Promotion (COEHP) at 505-272-8043 for questions related to treatment
  2. Notify Risk Services that you are working on your Workers’ Comp Claim packet by calling 505-273-1573 or emailing claims@unm.edu.
  3. Contact your HR Consultant so they can provide additional assistance throughout the process and while you are completing your paperwork.
  4. Contact Payroll for instructions on time entry.

For more information on Workers’ Compensation please see University Administrative Policy 3630: Workers’ Compensation and the Workers’ Compensation Administration site for the State of New Mexico.
