Pre-65 retirees are defined as those employees who retire from the University of New Mexico before the age of 65. Pre-65 retirees have access to the same dental coverage that they had as active employees, but pay premiums based on the percentages outlined in the VEBA premium contribution rate schedule.
Employees hired on or after July 1, 2015 are not eligible for UNM post-retirement medical and dental benefits.
For employees hired on or before June 30, 2015, the University of New Mexico offers eligible Pre-65 retirees dental benefits, in addition to retirement benefits available under the ERA Defined Benefit plan or the Alternative Retirement Plan. To access these benefits, a potential retiree must meet the criteria of University Administrative Policy 3600, Section 3.1
Dental Insurance Carrier
Pre-65 retirees have access to the same Dental coverage that they had when they were active employees.
UNM offers two dental plans through Delta Dental of New Mexico:
- Delta Dental PPO (low cost option)
- Use the Delta Dental PPO Network
- Delta Dental Premier (high cost option)
- Use the Delta Dental Premier Network

Services Outside of New Mexico
The Delta Dental program is a nationwide insurance company. You may use any dental provider outside of NM that is contracted with Delta Dental. When using a provider outside of NM, the provider should contact the NM Delta Dental office to confirm your coverage, and the claims must be submitted by the provider to the NM Delta Dental Office. Contact the Delta Dental office when accessing services outside of NM to ensure proper coordination and processing of claims.
