Employee Engagement Series

Do you ever wonder what makes a team truly great? The answer lies in consistently engaged employees! This year-round Employee Engagement Series is designed to keep the conversation going and empower you to take action.

This month, we focus on Gallup's Q12 question #7: "My opinions count at work."


Why This Matters

In today's fast-paced world, great ideas can come from anyone. When employees feel their voices are heard and valued, it leads to better decision-making, innovation, and problem-solving. Globally, only one in four employees strongly agree their opinions count at work. By doubling that number, organizations can see a significant reduction in turnover, safety incidents, and increased productivity.


Benefits of Feeling Heard

  • Stronger Teams: Diverse perspectives lead to more creative solutions.
  • Improved Decision-Making: Informed decisions based on a wider range of ideas.
  • Increased Engagement: Employees feel valued and invested in the organization's success.

What You Can Do Right Now

  • Managers:
    • Create feedback loops: Encourage regular communication and ask for employee input on decisions.
    • Use HR’s resources: Utilize our Discussion Planner to guide development discussions and ensure everyone's voice is heard. This planner is from the DDI course “Connect Through Conversations” and is a great tool to guide any discussion. If you or your department is interested in this course, please contact us at eod@unm.edu.
    • Make space for diverse opinions: Use techniques to prevent bias and encourage participation from all team members.

Give everyone an opportunity to contribute and share. Employees are more engaged when they feel like they’re heard.

Use active listening and show empathy to understand others’ perspectives, experiences, and emotions.
