Get Outside to Boost Mental and Physical Well-Being

The amazing New Mexico weather and vast outdoor space give us plenty of opportunity to disconnect and spend time in nature. Research suggests that enjoying the outdoors can improve our mental and physical well-being. Here are a few suggestions in the Albuquerque area. Grab your sunscreen, sunglasses, and sunhat, and get outside!

On Campus:

As the weather warms, our beautiful campuses offer many opportunities for an outdoor walk to refocus during the workday. LoboTrails provide routes on main, north, south, Rio Rancho, and even our branch campuses. On main campus, the Duck Pond is a great place to eat your lunch outside or enjoy a short walk to clear the mind.

Albuquerque Area:

The general Albuquerque area has many options for relaxing walks or even short weekend adventures. The Elena Gallegos Open Space is very accessible, providing hiking and mountain biking trails in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. The Paseo del Bosque path offers paved and dirt/gravel trails along the Rio Grande River and makes for a great walk in the shade of the cottonwood trees. The east side of the Sandia Mountains, including the area around Tijeras, provides cooler options for getting outdoors in the heat of the summer. For maps and more information, visit the Sandia Ranger District website.

These are just a few of the many opportunities for outdoor activity in the Albuquerque area. We hope it helps you to disconnect from your busy workday and boosts your physical and mental health!
