Time Off is Time Well Spent

Work has a way of filling every available space, and at times it may feel like there’s always something else to do—another email, another project or another item waiting on your to-do list. With summer approaching, it’s the perfect time to pause, step away and start thinking about something a little more refreshing: your next vacation.

Taking time off isn’t just something to look forward to—it’s one of the best things you can do for your overall well-being. Research shows that stepping away from your routine can boost your mood, improve your health and leave you feeling re-energized and more satisfied with life.

When we stay in “go mode” for too long, stress can start to take a toll. Over time, it can impact everything from your heart and immune system to digestion and sleep quality. Taking a break is a powerful way to reset. Even a short vacation can help interrupt the stress cycle and give your mind and body a chance to recover.

To avoid the harmful effects of chronic stress and burnout, we need time to replenish and recharge. This recovery process requires “switching off” from work. Giving yourself time away from work-related activities, and even thoughts about work, can have significant benefits.

If it’s been a while since your last getaway, now is a great time to start planning. UNM offers generous leave benefits and using them is an important part of maintaining balance and well-being, so don’t delay taking time away. Keep in mind there is a maximum amount of leave you can accrue, so planning is important. Connecting with your manager or supervisor early can help ensure your time away aligns with your department’s business needs.

Disconnect. Recharge. You’ve earned this time. Taking time off isn’t just a break from work—it’s an investment in a healthier, happier you.

If you’re looking for more ways to support your well-being, be sure to explore the Benefits & Employee Wellness websites to see how we can help.
