Career Development Policy #3260 describes career development programs available to UNM employees, supervisors, and managers. The policy was developed to support efforts to recruit and retain the best and brightest employees so UNM is successful in achieving its mission. These programs are designed to prepare employees to meet the challenges of the workplace and to retain our best employees by encouraging individual career planning.
For employees, career development is a self-initiated, flexible process, the fruits of which include the acquisition of new skills and knowledge, internal promotion, professional and personal development, increased job mobility, and higher job satisfaction. For managers, staff development can lead to an increase in staff , better-trained and more flexible staff, and a talented internal applicant pool for future job openings. Career development opportunities are an excellent way to retain valued staff. Career development is also an integral part of the UNM performance review system.
